Maureen Noftsinger, DVM

Maureen Noftsinger, DVM

I grew up knowing I wanted to be a vet starting around age 4. In high school, I started working at Olde Towne School for Dogs in the retail store as well as to start dog training. I also started working for a professional dog handler and showing dogs and did that through college. In college, I briefly decided to be a clinical psychologist but ultimately decided that veterinary medicine is definitely where I needed to be. I started working at a vet’s office in college and worked in a general practice and an ER. I loved the ER work and knew that I would end up in the ER. I graduated in 2001 and never thought I would come out and practice ER right away but found it was the best fit for me. I had some wonderful doctors that I worked with that mentored me. I took over the management of the clinic in 2004. I have had multiple titles including medical director and now the CEO. I love all animals but love learning about unconditional love between dogs and their people. Animals are such a beautiful gift to us, and I am glad to give back to them in any way I can.

ER medicine can be challenging in many ways, and I believe my background in psychology has been a beautiful blessing.

I am married to the love of my life and blended our families and now live on a small farm. We all love spending time outdoors and with the animals. We have four dogs (the doodle brigade as I call them and a livestock guardian dog), a barn cat, goats, sheep, a horse and lots of chickens. We hope to spread the love of animals using the farm.

She attended college just outside of Chicago, IL at Lake Forest College where she earned a BA in Biology and Spanish. She was also captain of the equestrian team throughout college. Also, she volunteered and worked at local kennels, zoos, and hospitals. Dr. Hampden-Smith earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University in 2018. With love for hiking and the outdoors, she moved to Roanoke with her fiancé to work at EVS.

Dr. Hampden-Smith and her fiancé have two dogs, Chili and Donuts, a hedgehog, and five cats. When not at work, she enjoys running, hiking, kayaking, and anything outdoors with her fiancé and dogs. Dr. Hampden-Smith is excited to be joining the EVS team.
