Heidi Brunk, DVM
After graduating vet school in 2006, Dr. Brunk worked at various small animal practices before starting at EVS in January of 2012. At EVS, she has found a fast-paced environment valuing excellence in veterinary care and is grateful to be able to offer her critical patients 24-hour care.
Dr. Brunk lives with her husband, their three children, young dog (Titus) and old cat (Corriander). She highly values her faith, family and friends, and she spends her time outside of work homeschooling her kids, singing with the Blacksburg Master Chorale, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. Dr. Brunk works most weekends, but is hopeful that someday she will be able to have more fall weekends free for Hokie football! Go Hokies!

Maureen Roberts, DVM
Dr. Roberts grew up knowing she wanted to be a vet starting around age 4. In high school, she worked at Olde Towne School for Dogs in the retail store and training. She worked for a professional dog handler and showed dogs in junior handling, conformation, and obedience in high school and college. She started working at a vet’s office in college and worked in both general practice and an ER. She graduated in 2001 from Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia and currently serves as the Medical Director. She loves all animals but loves seeing the unconditional love between dogs and their people. She is thrilled that she can help animals in any way since they give so much to the human race. Dr. Roberts is married and lives on a small farm. She loves spending time outdoors and with the animals. She has four dogs (2 Goldendoodles brigade and 2 livestock guardian dogs), a barn cat, goats, sheep, and lots of chickens.

Emily Hampden-Smith, DVM
Dr. Hampden-Smith was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She knew that she wanted to be a veterinarian from the age of 4 years old. Throughout her life, she helped on her uncle’s dairy farm in England, worked with numerous large and small animal veterinarians, and trained horses in dressage. She attended college just outside of Chicago, IL at Lake Forest College where she earned a BA in Biology and Spanish. She was also captain of the equestrian team throughout college. Also, she volunteered and worked at local kennels, zoos, and hospitals. Dr. Hampden-Smith earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University in 2018. With love for hiking and the outdoors, she moved to Roanoke with her fiancé to work at EVS.
Dr. Hampden-Smith and her fiancé have two dogs, Chili and Donuts, a hedgehog, and five cats. When not at work, she enjoys running, hiking, kayaking, and anything outdoors with her fiancé and dogs. Dr. Hampden-Smith is excited to be joining the EVS team.

Taylor Tran, DVM

Sara Wilkinson, DVM
Dr. Wilkinson was born in Connecticut and raised in Concord, New Hampshire. She received her bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona University in 2012 where she then received training and began working as a veterinary technician at a mixed animal practice in Flagstaff, Arizona. Her journey brought her back east to continue working as a vet tech until she was accepted into the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, DVM Class of 2021. Outside of work Dr. Wilkinson enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, crafting, dancing whenever she can, exploring new places, trying new foods, and above all spending time with her heeler dogs.

Anna Barnes, DVM
Dr. Barnes grew up in Arlington, VA, and always had a love for animals. She was raised with cats in her family and one of her first words was “kitty”. She knew she wanted to become a veterinarian when she saved a baby bird at the bus stop in elementary school.
She graduated from James Madison University in 2001 with a biology major. After graduating from the veterinary school at Virginia Tech in 2008, she moved to Richmond where she practiced in a small animal and exotics clinic and then an emergency clinic.
In 2014, she moved to Smith Mountain Lake to be closer to her parents and began working at a local veterinary practice. She kept in touch with her emergency medicine calling by serving relief shifts here at EVSS. When the opportunity to join this team arose, she was grateful to become a part!
Outside of the ER, Anna enjoys traveling, cooking, making art, and gardening. She has a heart for senior pets, adopting several to give them a place to “grow old, fat and happy”. She is a self-proclaimed “band nerd”, loves music, and plays piano. Professional interests include surgery and exotic species care.

Johanna Garvey, DVM
Dr. Garvey has enjoyed working in emergency since graduating, and has a passion for trauma, surgery, and wound management. She’s also dedicated to rescue work and has developed an addiction to bringing home strays. Dr. Garvey lives in Christiansburg with her two year old daughter and her herd of rescue pets: Milk-a genetic mess of a German Shepherd; Selsun-an always trembling Chihuahua mix; Lilly&Rosie-the old ladies/mini poodles; three cats-Jameson, Blackie Wallace, and Ketones; and Clarinse-a ball python. Outside of work and rescue, Dr. Garvey enjoys writing, hiking, running, baking, and napping with her family.
